Many think of the “Indian TV serial” is an ancient, boring, exaggerated and narrow amalgamation of endless shows, accusing them to lack the depth, storyline and substance when compared to many foreign series.
However, there have been some shows to hit Indian TV screens which brought about a change in the mentality. Here are some of them
The original Mahabharat which was first witnessed on DD National was a breakthrough for Indian Television. It aired for 2 years and was also broadcasted overseas across the BBC network in the UK. The casting was supreme, the acting flawless, the sets were beyond their time and the research done by director Ravi Chopra was spot on. Actors like Mukesh Khanna and Roopa Ganguli ended up shaping their careers after the fame and stardom they obtained doing this show. This show was re-run several times and also dubbed in different languages like Tamil and Bengali due to its universal appeal. Jassi Jaissi koi Nahin(2003-2007)
The hype surrounding this Tv show is completely justified once you have watched it. Jassi Jaissi koi Nahin was a beautifully written TV show revolving around Jassi(Mona Singh) and her life. Originally aired on Sony Entertainment Television this show struck the right cord with viewers and won various awards.
Rarely we find an Indian TV show plays with our innermost emotions and makes us look deep within ourselves to question the atrocities of society which are prevalent even today, Balika Vadhu did just that. The show brought this unique social angle which was never seen before and thus, acknowledged by everyone. The show which aired on Colors TV, exploited the conscience of viewers while they watched the prejudices and bias of the people towards a little girl in rural Rajasthan. The success of the original series resulted in 2 more seasons. This show actually opened our eyes and due to its appeal, it was broadcasted in many countries like Croatia, Bulgaria and Vietnam to name a few.
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai(2004-2006, 2016-)
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai can probably be called one of the best sitcoms in the history of Indian Television. The show which revolved around the day to day lives of an upper class Gujrathi family, gained a cult following and enjoyed the best TRP’s ever witnessed by Indian sitcoms. The show one various Indian Academy Awards and was critically accepted for its dry, but clever humor. Fortunately, the producer Jamnadas Majethia has announced that he is thinking about a sequel to the show in 2016.
It would be impossible to not include 24: Indian Series in this list. The first season of this series aired in October 2013 on Colors TV. It felt like a breathe of fresh air while watching this show as it was highly unique when compared to the other traditional shows being aired at the time. It had an amazing and accomplished cast featuring Anil Kapoor, Tisca Chopra, Neil Bhoopalam and Mahendra Bedi. The plot revolves around 24 hours of an ATU agents (Anil Kapoors) life, and the honest story telling, gripping plot, apt characterization and definitive storyline is sure to give you the thrills and chills. The second season started shooting in February 2016.
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi(2000-2008)
8 years, 1833 episodes of this widely recognizable Indian Soap Opera have landed it in this list. The show was differently perceived by everybody and while it got mixed reactions, it continued. Apart from dominating Indian Television for all those years, KSBKBT won countless academy awards and also holds the record for the highest TRP’s ever witnessed by an Indian Television Series.
Every once in a while we come across a show that is way ahead of its time, it moves our soul, and plays with our emotions making us think if we’d done the same thing in those situations or just become a deaf to our instincts and miss out on the best parts of our life, this show was one of those. Rishta.com aired on Sony Entertainment Television in 2010. It was an exclusive, though it didn’t get the fame and recognition it deserves, people who followed the show believe that it was the finest ever produced on Indian TV screens. The last episode of season 1 was a cliffhanger, followed by desperate cries for season 2. Produced by Yash Raj Films and is one the most critically acclaimed shows of Indian Television today.
