On this Goa Statehood Day, the prisoners have taken upto something that is the utmost need of India at this point- education. Through Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)’s special study centre at the prison, they are very enthusiastically completing their courses.
This prison is speedily marching towards reformation with this move as 21 out of the 48 inmates have signed up for graduate and post graduate degrees.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar felicitated the inmates. He said, “The concept of Goa’s modern jail is correctional treatment not punitive treatment. This will be a unique jail in the country which will be considered to be a reformatory home for the inmates. I am sure that administrators across the country would come to visit and study the provisions made here.”
The jail also has many workshops like carpentry, candle and paper making, tailoring and so on. They are successfully training inmates to reform themselves and be self sufficient by learning skills to earn a living!
